General description

Frame and floor bearers are made of steel profiles, and sheet steel is usually used for the walls.

The floor is usually made of wooden planks or plywood. Wood is relatively expensive, but it has important advantages over other solutions: it is durable and resilient, does not dent, is easy to replace during repairs, and with an appropriate finish, it provides a satisfactory friction coefficient, which is important for securing the cargo.

Standard containers can also be fitted with optional accessories (extras):

• Forklift pockets: these allow handling of empty containers using forklifts. Loaded containers may only be picked up in this way if it is specifically permitted. Forklift pockets are only installed on 20' containers and are arranged parallel to the centre of the container in the bottom side rails. 40' containers only have forklift pockets in certain cases because the pockets are relatively close together and these large containers would be difficult to balance.
• Grappler pockets: in general, containers are handled by top spreaders using the corner fittings or corner castings. However, some containers have grappler pockets so they can be handled by grapplers.

Special equipment is available for transporting special cargoes:

• Clothes rails for hanging garments: special lashing rings attached to the top side rail serve to accommodate clothes rails on which textiles may be transported hanging on clothes hangers. These are often used when importing goods from East Asia. Additional lashing rings are installed on the bottom side rail and the corner posts.
• Inlet (bulk bag or liquid bulk bag): standard containers can be fitted with plastic linings for transporting bulk goods or non-hazardous liquids.

The wooden components of most containers are impregnated against infestation by insects. When wood is used, it may be necessary under certain circumstances to comply with the quarantine regulations of the country of destination, and a phytosanitary certificate may need to be included with the shipping documents. Information can be obtained from the plant protection services and authorities of the German federal states.

• Suitable for any standard cargo / standard weight goods.
• Containers can be equipped with special linings called 'liner bags' for transporting bulk goods (e.g. coffee or grain).
• Some containers are equipped with forklift pockets.
• Various lashing lugs on the top and bottom side rails as well as on the corner posts. The lashing lugs are designed for a maximum permissible load of 1000 kg.
• HC containers are approximately 30 cm higher, making them suitable for large-volume cargoes (e.g. machines).
• Pallet-wide containers are approximately 5 cm wider and are designed for optimal transportation of cargo on EURO pallets. Three pallets can be placed next to one another in the container without any loss of stowage space. This means that they can accommodate three pallets more than a standard container. The most common application area is currently the local market because this container type is still rather new and not yet widely-known.
